Chapter 9 – Saintess’ chocolate and pre-live stream
“Finally it’s over. I’m so tired I could die.”
“But it’s only the first day.”
After the test was over, Iori and Kanata were walking home after school.
The test was tough on his post-vacation body. The thought of the remaining two days of the test was enough to make him feel exhausted.
“Thanks for your help with my test prep.”
“Likewise, thanks for the art assignment.”
Like friends, they helped each other with their strengths and areas of expertise and tried their best to get through the end of the winter break.
Iori, in particular, was a professional illustrator, and was known as a heavenly illustrator. Although he had not revealed his true identity to Kanata, he often helped him with his art assignments, making use of his technical skills as long as he did not get discovered.
As an ordinary high school student, Kanata could count on Iori to be a skillful artist. Iori’s art subject of choice was calligraphy.
His choice of art subject was calligraphy because he thought that if he chose fine art, he might be exposed as an illustrator, and calligraphy would allow him to use his artistic sense in moderation.
“Then, I’ll go this way.”
He parted from Kanata at a crossroads in a residential area about five minutes walk from the school. Iori’s home was about another ten minutes walk from here.
Now alone, Iori walked through the residential area toward the downtown area.
Once back near his home, he decided to stop at a nearby convenience store in search of a warm drink and a nutritional drink for studying for his test.
Just as he was about to enter the convenience store, Iori spotted the silver-haired girl he sees almost every day.
“Ah, are you on your way home?”
Asumi came out of the convenience store, holding a cup of hot coffee to warm her hands.
“Are you looking for lunch?”
“No, just a warm drink and a nutritional drink.”
“I see. You must be tired after all.”
“Well, that’s what the drinks are for, there are still two days left of the test, and the stream is today. I’ll be fine.”
The dark circles still remained under Iori’s eyes, just like the morning exchange, and when she heard about the nutritional drink, Asumi looked worried.
He would somehow find a way to get through the next two days, and it was his own fault for not studying regularly in the first place. He acted as stoutly as he had in the morning.
“Speaking of which, I have something good for you. Would you like some of this?”
“Yes. When you are tired, you need something sweet, and it is important to replenish sugar, right? If you like, you can have it.”
Asumi took out a piece of chocolate from the bag on her wrist, peeled off the silver paper of the chocolate, and presented it to Iori.
Was it her way of thanking him for taking care of the dinner?
Seemingly, she wanted him to have it.
There was no reason to refuse, and it would be wrong to ignore her concern. Iori gratefully accepted the offer.
“Thank you, I’ll have it, then.”
“How is it? Isn’t it delicious?”
“Yes, it is soothing me, ah……”
But he made a slight mistake. Iori put his mouth directly on the chocolate offered to him.
Because of the height difference between the two of them, the chocolate was offered facing up. Iori saw that the chocolate seemed to be pointed at his mouth, so he reflexively bit into it.
Iori froze a little.
“Sorry, I put my mouth directly on it.”
“Fufu, it’s okay. I just had to break it open and hand a piece over to you.”
He quickly apologized in a panic, but Asumi laughed and ate the chocolate.
She probably wanted to show that she didn’t mind.
However, as she chewed, Asumi’s face gradually turned down. She was silently chewing the chocolate as if to cover it up.
“……You do mind it, don’t you.”
“Please don’t mention it!”
Seeing Asumi like this, Iori also felt embarrassed and blurted out a point.
He could no longer taste the chocolate that had been so sweet just a moment ago.
“Should I go buy you a new one?”
“N, no, I’m fine with this!”
He was about to head inside the store, but there was no point in getting a new one now that he had already eaten it. Asumi forced a little chuckle and held Iori back.
“……Umm. Well then, I look forward to tonight’s stream. Until then, please rest yourself.”
“I’ll be back soon. You too, take care of yourself.”
Then they parted hastily from each other. They both tried to mend their appearances, but it was an unexpected happening for a man and a woman of their age.
The sweetness and bitterness of the chocolate were now rushing into Iori’s mouth.
Around 8:30 pm.
Iori and Asumi were in front of their computers waiting for today’s other partner to collaborate with them.
Since he had already finished studying for a test and his work, he would be released from his busy schedule once the stream was made, but the two were troubled by this situation, with the awaited person not showing up.
However, he was thankful that the awkwardness of the daytime was gone during this waiting period, because it was still there when they first connected.
“Hello, guys! Sorry for being late.”
It was less than ten minutes before the stream started when they heard such a gutless voice over the display.
“Um, aren’t there still less than five minutes before the broadcast?”
“Well, well, Reina’s probably busy too.”
“Sorry, I was sleeping. Tehepero.”
Asumi blamed the person who finally appeared in a cold tone, and Iori followed up. Iori’s hand flipped out in anger at the jokey tone of her words, and it was hard to believe that this was a conversation occurring before the broadcast.
Wouldn’t it sound wonderful if we said that they have a certain level of trust in each other?
Today’s partner in the collaboration was Kokonoe Reina, who was Asumi’s colleague from the same agency.
(TLN: 九重零七, Kokonoe Reina. Kokonoe: ninefold, imperial palace, the court; Reina: 07, and found at the comments of King-ohger trailer, it means “Queen” in Spanish.)
She was a good friend of Asumi’s and Iori often collaborated with her.
As a side note, Iori was acquainted with the illustrator in charge of Reina.
She was a petite girl with light blue hair and a sleepy expression. She was a VTuber with more than 500,000 subscribers, and along with Asumi, she was one of the most successful VTubers among her peers.
“I haven’t been sleeping lately. Well, I’ve been looking over the progress report.”
“That’s good, though. And please sleep properly so you won’t collapse.”
“We can’t comment on others, though.”
“Fufu. You’re right.”
These popular streamers and illustrator were quite busy at the beginning of the New Year. Reina was also a student, and her lack of sleep was most likely related to tests at this time.
“Eh, what is it? What happened to you two?”
“What do you mean?”
“Umm, I’m not sure? But you two seem to be getting closer.”
“I think it’s just your feeling.”
She was perceptive. Reina was a girl who seemed to be laid back and insensitive, yet she was quite discerning. She was so perceptive that one would think that she knew everything.
However, she would never imagine that the two of them were broadcasting next door to each other.
“Did you f*ck her, by any chance?”
“You’re an idol, aren’t you?”
“Phew~ I have long since thrown such a thing away.”
Without covering up, Reina said the worst things without hesitation. Asumi’s reaction was thin, as if she was used to it.
When Iori rebuked her with dismay, she spat at him further.
Her open and blunt attitude, which was a gap between her lovely appearance, was also popular among her fans. Iori and Asumi also accepted her unique personality because they felt comfortable with her.
To put it simply, the relationship between the three of them could be described as that of bad friends. For Iori, who had few friends, their relationship was a bit precious.
“Geez. Where did you go in these early days……Eh, it’s almost time to go. Let’s get started.”
“Here we go.”
While they were having a chat with each other without any proper discussion, it was time to start the live stream.
Asumi recalled the early days when the two of them had been performing together as a seiso duo, and sadly pressed the button to start the live stream.
