Chapter 8 – Good morning, test, and pal
After the weekend of cleaning up, Monday dawned with a room that was cleaner than ever before, and a refreshed mind.
“I hope the tests and such will not ruin it.”
But today was the first day of the testing period after the vacation break. He would be busy with work, tests, and streams, so he was worried that he would ruin his room again.
Thinking about it, Iori left the house, with scattered prints and other materials that he had pulled out when he was studying for the test. If Asumi saw it, one never knew what she would say.
“Good morning.”
Just like the other day, as soon as he left his room, a voice that sounded like a rolling bell echoed through the hallway of the apartment. Unlike before, there was some warmth in that voice.
Rubbing his sleepy eyes, he greeted her back, “Minase, huh? Good morning,”.
“You have dark circles under your eyes, Tokisaka-san. Are you okay with tonight’s stream?”
“It’s a side effect of all-night cramming for the test. It happens all the time, so I’m fine.”
Pointing under her own eyes, Asumi told him about the dark circles. It was a natural occurrence if one tries to balance studying for a test with work.
They would have a collaboration stream tonight, but since it would involve not only Iori and Asumi, but another person as well, he could not be absent. He smiled amiably and acted stoutly.
“Shall I lend you some concealer?”
“I’d rather do a Kabuki-like shading and go around distracting the class from their concentration.”
“How annoying. Well, if you can joke around, you’re still doing well. I’ll see you tonight then.”
When Iori jokingly replied to Asumi’s concern, She chuckled lightly, nodded, and walked away toward the elevator.
Although they walk to school on the same route, he didn’t go after Asumi.
Since they were classmates and had some topics in common, they could go to school together, exchanging light conversation. However, it would be extremely conspicuous if Asumi, the famous saintess, and Iori, an extremely ordinary boy, suddenly became friendly with each other.
It would be troublesome if anyone attempted to do anything to them, so the two of them have decided to keep their interactions at school the same to some extent as before.
Even so, they were now able to have casual exchanges at the apartment, and considering that it might be thanks to the identity leak, it might not be that bad.
With that thought in mind, Iori used the stairs to make his way to the school.
“Yo, good morning.”
“Good morning. D*mn hot guy.”
When he arrived at the classroom, there was a male student who greeted him as soon as he took his seat.
His name was Numakura Kanata. He was Iori’s only male friend.
Iori’s first impression of him was that he was a good-looking guy with a soft-spoken demeanor, in contrast to Iori, who was not particularly conspicuous. He never thought they would become friends, but when they started talking, their interests matched unexpectedly and before they knew it, they had become friends.
“You look sleepy.”
“I do, that’s for sure. And it’s cold.”
“If you sleep, you’ll die, okay?”
“We are in the snowy mountains, aren’t we? Well, if I die in the test, please pick up my bones.”
“You can count on me. My dog will love his new toy.”
“Are you a psychopath…….”
Impressions were not always reliable, as they now spend their recess time talking and joking with each other.
Kanata was the most popular person in this class along with Asumi, and it was not unusual for him to be surrounded by classmates other than Iori.
Asumi was surrounded by half of the boys and half of the girls, while Kanata was surrounded by mostly girls.
Speaking of Iori, who had established his status as an introvert, he did not talk much with anyone other than Kanata, so his classmates did not come close to him. Perhaps that was why Kanata was involved with him as a way of avoiding them.
On the other hand, Asumi seemed to have no such presence, and since it was shortly before the test, she was swarmed by many of her classmates.
“Minase-san! Teach me math!”
“Ah, wait! The first period is English, right?”
“Can I see your printouts? I haven’t finished mine yet.”
“I know, let’s have a New Year’s party after the test period is over.”
Annoying. That was what he thought.
They were just relying on her, they should have been a little more considerate of Asumi. Some of them were clearly going by with the intention of playing, and it was nothing short of disgusting.
He could understand the desire to rely on an honor student and befriend the saintess before the test, but it was just plain selfish, and Iori frowned.
“It would be nice if Minase could just say no.”
“I guess she’s called saintess because she won’t do that.”
“Because it’s convenient, right?”
“You’re harsh, aren’t you?”
“You and Minase are both too kind. From my experience, convenience is always a scary thing.”
Iori was looking contemptuously at the crowd, but Kanata did not.
Kind, good at studying, and good-looking, making them popular with both boys and girls.
While acknowledging their good points, Iori advised Kanata based on “his own experience”.
“I mean, isn’t it time for us to start studying too?”
“I’ve spent a lot of my winter break studying, so I’m ready for it. The reason why Minase-san doesn’t say no is likely because she has confidence in herself.”
“D*mn you honor student.”
“You too, right?”
For Iori, who pulled an overnight cramming, it was essential for him to read the textbook and notes before the test. Kanata, who showed a relaxed attitude, was an honor student and must have been doing a good job of reviewing the material.
Iori couldn’t help but swear.
Iori envied and resented them, because of all the spare time they had, and glanced at Asumi for a moment.
Then, his eyes met with Asumi’s. Since they were classmates, it was not surprising that their eyes met.
So far, she would look away from him as if nothing had happened, and after getting to know each other, she would even give him a sneer, but today was a little different.
Asumi’s usual calm eyes and expression were somewhat stern toward Iori today, and he felt that she appeared to have a “bitter” mood.
(What is that?)
“What’s wrong?”
“No, it’s nothing.”
“Do you want to get a lesson from Lady Saintess too, Tokisaka-kun?”
“I have no intention of jumping in there. So you teach me.”
“I’ll show you step by step, then.”
“Gross.”
He was wondering what was behind her implied gaze, but Kanata threw him a joke and left it unexplained.
Iori decided to ask for a lecture from his good friend, but the saintess was still giving him a mysterious look.
